Holy Thursday

 In the Sacred Triduum, the Church solemnly celebrates the greatest mysteries of our redemption, keeping the memorial of the Lord, crucified, buried and risen.

The Triduum begins on Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord's Supper, this year celebrated by Father Connolly. Presiding at the Mass will be Bishop Dominick Lagonegro, our former Pastor and Retired Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of NY. The principal mysteries to be commemorated are the Institution of the Holy Eucharist and of Priestly Order, and the commandment of the Lord concerning fraternal charity.

Due to the pandemic, the Washing of the Feet will be omitted, but we will present the Holy Oils that were blessed by Cardinal Dolan at the Chrism Mass on Tuesday, and we will process to the school (keeping social distance) after Mass. The Repository is set up on the stage and the entire gym and cafeteria are available.

A reminder that free tickets are necessary, but if there is a need, the Liturgy will be livestreamed to the gym and a Deacon will bring Holy Communion.

Updates from St. Columba - Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion

 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord ~ March 28, 2021

Entrance Antiphon

Latin: Hosanna filio David: benedíctus qui venit in nomine Domini.  Rex Israel: Hosanna in excelsis.

English: Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

The King of Israel. Hosanna in the highest!

Entrance (Verses as needed):
All glory, laud, and honor

To you, Redeemer, King!

To whom the lips of children

Made sweet hosannas ring.

1.         You are the King of Israel

            And David's royal Son,

            Now in the Lord's Name coming,

            Our King and Blessed One.

2.         The company of angels

            Are praising you on high;

            And we, with all creation,

            In chorus make reply.

Text:  Gloria, laus et honor;  Theodulph of Orleans, c.760-821; tr. by John M. Neale, 1818-1866, alt.

Psalm: My God, my God, O Why have you abandoned me?

Gospel: Praise and honor to you, O Lord, O Lord. Praise and honor to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Presentation (For when Fr. Connolly is the celebrant)

1.         O Sacred Head, surrounded

            By crown of piercing thorn!

            O bleeding Head, so wounded,

            Reviled and put to scorn!

            The pow’r of death comes o’er you,

            the glow of life decays,

            Yet angel hosts adore you

            And tremble as they gaze.

2.         I see your strength and vigor

            All fading in the strife,

            And death with cruel rigor,

            Bereaving you of life;

            O agony and dying!

            O love to sinners free!

            Jesus, all grace supplying,

            O turn your face on me.

3.         In this, your bitter passion,

            Good Shepherd, think of me

            With your most sweet compassion,

            Unworthy though I be;

            Beneath your cross abiding

            Forever would I rest,

            In your dear love confiding,

            And with your presence blest.

Sanctus XVIII Chant:

Sanctus, Sanctus,

Sanctus Dóminus Deus Sábaoth.

Pleni sunt coeli et terra glória tua.

Hosánna in excélsis.

Benedíctus qui venit in nómine Dómini.

Hosánna in excélsis.          (Letra y música: Graduale Romanum, 1974.)

Agnus Dei XVIII Chant:

1, 2. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccáta mundi: miserére nobis.

3. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccáta mundi: dona nobis pacem.

(Letra y música: Graduale Romanum, 1974.)

Communion Antiphon: Father, if this cup cannot pass me by, thy will be done.

Communion:

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (PICARDY)

1. Let all mortal flesh keep silence,

And with fear and trembling stand;

Ponder nothing earthly-minded,

For with blessing in his hand

Christ our God to earth descendeth,

Our full homage to demand.

2. King of kings, yet born of Mary,

As of old on earth he stood,

Lord of lords in human vesture;

In the Body and the Blood

He will give to all the faithful

His own self for heav’nly food.

3. Rank on rank the host of heaven

Spreads its vanguard on the way,

As the Light of Light descendeth

From the realms of endless day,

That the pow’rs of hell may vanish

As the darkness clears away.

4. At his feet the six-winged seraph;

Cherubim with sleepless eye,

Veil their faces to the Presence,

As with ceaseless voice they cry,

“Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God!

Holy, Holy, Lord Most High!”

Text: 87 87 87; Liturgy of St. James, 4th cent.; para. by Gerard Moultrie, 1829–1885, alt. Music: French, 17th cent.; melody fr. Chansons populaires des Provinces de France, 1860.

MOTHER GLORIA’s OBITUARY

Rev. Mother Gloria Castro, OBT, 96, died peacefully on March 21, 2021 at her home at St. Aloysius Novitiate, surrounded by her loving sisters. She dedicated herself to religious life for more than 75 years, as well as to the Catholic education of children.

Born in El Salvador, she was the daughter of Tacio and Maria Silvia Castro. Mother Gloria studied at the Normal School for Teachers in San Salvador. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Fordham University and a Masters in School Administration from Columbia University.

In 1944, she entered the Congregation of Sisters Oblates to Divine Love in El Salvador. Four years later, she immigrated to the United States and was instrumental in opening the first parish school at St. Clare of Assisi Parish in the Bronx in 1951where she served as the firs principal for 16 years and as a math teacher for more than 20 years.

In 1960, Mother Gloria assisted in the acquisition of a property in Hopewell Junction that became St. Aloysius Novitiate. It is here where the future religious Sisters of the Order are formed. In 1972, the Sisters started an early childhood program: St. Aloysius Happy House Learning Center, which expanded to include nursery, pre-k, and kindergarten classes throughout the years. Mother Gloria served as the second principal of St. Aloysius Happy House for 28 years.

In 1966, Mother Gloria became the Provincial Superior of the Sacred Heart Province. She was elected as the Vicar General in 1969 and in 1975 became the Superior General. During this time, Mother Gloria lived in Via Marruvio in Rome. She returned to the United States in 1981 and continued her work at St. Clare School.

Under Mother Gloria’s guidance, the Oblates to the Blessed Trinity were formed in 1987 in the Archdiocese of New York. In addition to St. Aloysius Novitiate, they also have Blessed Trinity Convent in the Bronx. Mother Gloria spent her “retirement” years at St. Aloysius where her untiring spirit, sustained by her deep spirituality and belief in God, continued to make her an example of true dedication in the service of the Church as an Oblate to the Blessed Trinity.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 1-5pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday at 11:30am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.

PLEASE NOTE: In compliance with NYS guidelines, social distancing and face masks will be required. Since capacity may be limited, all attendees should be prepared for potential extended waiting periods.

Memorial donations may be made to Oblates to the Blessed Trinity, St. Aloysius Novitiate, P.O. Box 98, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533. Please visit Mother’s Book of Memories at www.mchoulfuneralhome.com.
